Abstract

The "Age of Science" refers to the present era defined by the central role of scientific knowledge, technology, and innovation in shaping human society, economies, and governance. Unlike previous ages driven by agriculture, industry, or information, this age is characterized by rapid advancements in fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, renewable energy, space exploration, and data science. Science now drives policy decisions, economic growth, public health, and climate action, while also raising ethical, social, and equity questions. For nations like Nigeria, the Age of Science presents both opportunities and challenges: the opportunity to leverage research, innovation, and STEM education for industrialization and sustainable development, and the challenge of bridging infrastructure gaps, funding deficits, and human capital flight. This paper argues that to thrive in the Age of Science, governments must prioritize investment in R&D, science education, and homegrown innovation.
